A few weeks ago, my sister and her family came to visit us for the first time since having a baby. I wanted to make sure they had a comfortable place to stay, knowing it was their first time traveling with her.

The guest room was our dumping grounds during the ORC and closet projects. There were clothes everywhere, random supplies, you name it, it was on the floor in that room. I was also sort of using it as my office when I needed to take calls, but that got embarrassing rather quickly because my background was a hot mess.

So I did what any sane person would do… a 24-hour makeover to get the room back in order. Not only did I only have about eight hours to get it all done, but I started 24 hours before they were scheduled to arrive.

The Mood Board

Here’s the mood board I put together for the space.

This mood board is for the other wall, but that will be a phase 2 project.

Luckily, I had all of the furniture pieces already (or similar) and the only new thing we were adding was a rug. So other than painting and installing baseboards, we just had to put the room back together.

Before

Yikes, right?

The first step was to empty the room. Everything had to go. Brandon helped me move the books to the basement, clothes back to our closet, and desks into the other room that will become the new office.

I used my favorite laser measure tool to take wall measurements for baseboards. Brandon cut those for me while I started painting the wall detail. I pulled a couple of sample quarts I had in the garage from when I was choosing our exterior paint color. I was looking for a green-grey or green-blue tone.

Once the painting was done, the room came together pretty quickly.

After!

Here’s what it looks like after we added a cozy rug, beautiful large scale art, textiles, and paint.

I designed this room around this beautiful rug from the Amber Lewis x Loloi line that they kindly gifted me. I already own this rug in the Ocean/Brick color way and love it. They both have a really great texture and are not printed like many of the other Loloi rugs are. I paired it with a cushioned rug pad which makes all the difference. Don’t skip it!

The rug definitely pulls pinky tones, but it brings warmth to the room. I think this rug would look good in any space.

4 Easy Ways to Update a Space

  • Paint a fun detail on the wall. The paint draws your eye up and actually helps raise the low headboard, visually. This is an inexpensive way to add a layer to the room.
  • Add a cozy rug. This is my third Loloi rug from the #AmberLewisxLoloi line and my second Billie rug. I truly love this rug (I also purchased this same one for our closet) and the beautiful textures and tones it brings to a space.
  • Hang beautiful art and go large! It’s always better to err on the larger side. This landscape called “Oak Park” is from Juniper Print Shop in 20×30. I’ve been eyeing it for months and it’s perfect to tie in the wall and rug colors.
  • Textiles in mixed prints and patterns. I went for a mix of geometric and floral.

It was a whirlwind makeover, but I’m really happy with how it turned out. And my sister enjoyed it, too!
