This is a love letter to my favorite curtain rod.
I love the look and function of French curtain rods, but the one I came across was pretty expensive. My goal was to use the same rod throughout my home, so after counting up the number of windows I had, I went on a hunt to find a more affordable option.
Unlike traditional curtain rods that end with finials, French curtain rods curve back towards the wall, creating a seamless, continuous line that adds a refined aesthetic to the room. This design not only enhances the visual appeal, but also ensures better light blockage and improved privacy by preventing gaps between the curtains and the wall. The light blocking benefit was important to me to ensure the best sleep possible.
How to DIY an Extra Long Curtain Rod
My window width was 120″, but in order to extend it beyond the window on each side (always hang high and wide!), I needed an extra long curtain rod. This particular rod doesn’t come in a size larger than 120″, so I decided to hack the rod.
The curtain rod comes in 33-66″ width and 66-120″ width and four different finishes, but I love the matte black. It’s a modern, classic finish that adds that little bit of contrast that every space needs.
Here’s a diagram that will hopefully show you how this is constructed. I used (1) 66-120″ rod and (1) 33-66″ rod. Basically, you need a support rod between the two thicker rods.
Using a hack saw, I cut off the finial on one of the thicker rods. This allows me to slide the smaller rod into it and create support. The middle bracket moves to the center.
The other thing you will absolutely need is this curtain rod tape that you add to the top of the rod that allows your drapes to slide smoothly across the smaller rods. Trust me, it’ll drive you bonkers if you don’t have this because your rings will get stuck. It’s peel and stick and easy to apply.
I hope this helps all of the visual people out there looking for an affordable solution to buying an extra long curtain rod. It stumped me for a very long time until I decided to just try it.
